The Great Man Hook

My play, The Great Man Hook, is centered upon Senator Hubert Humphrey’s struggle to win the vote that ended the southern segregationist’s filibuster of the Civil Rights bill of 1964. This was a crucial element in the fulfillment of President Lyndon Johnson’s pledge, made in the aftermath of President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, to pass meaningful civil rights legislation in the United States for the first time. It portrays the political maneuvering between Senators Humphrey, Everett Dirkson, Richard B. Russell and President Johnson, among others, as each man fought to preserve his ideals, and his political future.
